Application Procedure and Required Documents

A well-organised ARI application connects the applicant’s documents, the investment evidence and the official procedure. Prepare the file around the route and the people applying, then follow the instructions issued for that process.

Key considerations

  • Use AIMA’s official ARI channels for the initial application and its current instructions for each stage.
  • Foreign documents need the correct authentication, translation and validity at the relevant time.
  • Keep proof of submission, payment and every subsequent notification.

Before the application is submitted

Identify the investment category and the applicant’s personal eligibility before preparing a submission. Confirm which entity will issue the evidence of the investment and what that evidence must demonstrate. Coordinate the investment timetable with bank checks, documentary formalities and the availability of original records.

A Portuguese tax number and the financial arrangements needed for the chosen investment are practical parts of preparation. They are not a residence authorisation. If a representative will act, ensure the authority granted covers the intended acts and that access to official notifications is clearly allocated.

The core documentary file

AIMA publishes route-specific checklists. Use the checklist applicable to the actual investment and assemble a separate set of personal documents for each applicant. The following groups provide an organising framework rather than a substitute for that checklist.

  • Identity and entry: valid passport or travel document and evidence relevant to lawful entry and stay.
  • Personal eligibility: foreign criminal-record evidence, authorisation for consultation of the Portuguese record and the relevant health cover.
  • Financial and compliance records: required tax and social-security evidence, and declarations relevant to the investment commitment.
  • Investment evidence: bank documentation and the certificates, declarations or registrations specified for the route.
  • Family evidence: civil-status, dependency, education, adoption or guardianship documents as applicable.

A staged preparation checklist

Organise preparation around the next action and its supporting evidence. This working sequence is an organisational aid, not a published AIMA timetable. It helps avoid ordering every time-sensitive certificate at the beginning of a process that may still depend on other steps.

Authentication, translation and expiry

The issuing country, document type and applicable international instruments determine whether an apostille, consular legalisation or another recognition method is required. A scan does not cure a missing authentication. Check whether the Portuguese translation must itself be certified and keep the original and its authentication together.

AIMA’s ARI FAQ refers to foreign criminal-record certificates issued less than three months earlier. The investment checklist also identifies recent tax and social-security evidence, subject to the applicable verification arrangements. Plan issuance close enough to the required stage to avoid unnecessary expiry and repeat costs.

Registration, examination and attendance

The initial ARI procedure uses the official ARI portal. Follow its registration, document-upload and payment instructions, then retain the resulting references and receipts. An upload, registration or payment confirmation is not the same as a final decision granting residence.

AIMA may require updated information, originals or personal attendance for identity and biometric checks. Read each notification for its deadline and scope. If information is missing or inconsistent, respond through the channel indicated for the file and retain evidence that the response was delivered.

Decision and issue of the residence card

Keep the decision notification separately from the card. Check personal details and validity when the card arrives, and address errors through the appropriate official channel. Record future renewal and minimum-presence obligations at this stage.

For a family, monitor each person’s application and document rather than assuming one approval resolves all files. A pending application or payment receipt should not be used as a substitute for a travel document without checking the rules for the journey concerned.

A practical application record

Create a dated index showing what was submitted, by whom, through which channel and under which process number. Include the document issue date, expiry where relevant, translation and authentication status, and any request for a replacement.

Before every submission, compare the current AIMA instructions with the file. Procedures for initial grants, renewals and older pending cases can differ. A checklist retained from a previous applicant is useful background, but it cannot determine the requirements for a later application.

Practical questions

Should I order every certificate before choosing the investment?

Start with the document inventory and recognition requirements. Order documents with limited accepted validity when their expected use is clearer, allowing time for issuance, authentication and translation. If a stage is delayed, check whether an updated document is required rather than submitting an expired record because it was obtained first.

What should I take to an appointment?

Use the actual appointment notice and current route checklist to prepare the originals, identity documents and any updates requested. Compare the appointment pack with the uploaded file and mark changed documents. The notice for the particular attendance takes precedence over a checklist copied from another person’s appointment.

How do I handle a request for additional information?

Break the notice into individual items. Record who will obtain each item, the response deadline and the submission channel. Answer the question asked, explain any genuine discrepancy and retain the complete response with delivery evidence. If a requested item cannot be obtained in time, seek advice before the deadline rather than ignoring it.
